Caelus and Terrapass Partner to Launch Summer Carbon Offsetting Education Program

TULSA, July 22, 2015 /3BL Media/ - Caelus Sustainability Consulting (Caelus) and TerraPass have partnered to educate both businesses and individuals about the importance and role carbon offsetting plays to help them reduce their emissions and impact on the environment. The campaign will consist of a series of articles and opinion posts released through several different social media outlets over the next several months. In addition, visitors to the Caelus website will be able to conveniently measure their carbon footprint thanks to the new TerraPass carbon calculator that has been embedded into the site. The goal of the campaign is get people engaged and raise awareness of carbon offsetting while at the same time dispelling some of the common misconceptions that surround the process.

Carbon offsetting gained international awareness back in 1997 with the signing of the Kyoto Protocol, but a lot has changed in the last seventeen years. Projects have matured, markets have developed and certifications have strengthened. Carbon offsetting is now a key component of any corporate sustainability program as well as a way for individuals to take action to minimize their impact.

Part of the campaign will concentrate on individuals and their relationship to carbon specifically, while another will be aimed at businesses. “Many people are not aware of the concept of carbon at the individual level and we hope to raise people’s awareness about what a carbon footprint is, what other tools are available to measure individual ecological impact, and what proactive steps can be taken to minimize their impact,” continues Gilbreath.

Offsetting is a critical component to any business’ sustainability program. While ‘carbon neutrality’ should be the ultimate goal of all businesses, it is almost impossible to reach through efficiency gains alone. Offsetting should be used to close that final carbon gap. In fact, it is becoming more and more common to see a sustainability mandate for corporation. According to a 2013 CDP report, companies in the US dominated as the largest source of offset demand by volume, purchasing 6.6 million tonnes of offsets in that year. This Caelus program hopes to educate and support the upward trend for more offset adoption.
