In Your Community: DECA Students Recognized at Skills Summit

Reaching the summit of a mountain is a great achievement. It takes perseverance to finish the climb.  DECA students recently used the same determination to reach the Skills to Go Summit. 

Supported by AT&T through the AT&T Aspire Mentoring Academy, DECA launched a skills-based mentoring project in five cities across the country to work with underserved students. The project supports classroom instruction and provides “real world” learning through visits to AT&T work sites. AT&T employees volunteered as mentors, and AT&T contributed nearly $150,000 to the project.

In Fairburn, GA, 175 students from Langston Hughes High School received skills training from AT&T volunteers including financial literacy, decision making, career planning and communication skills. Of those students, 50 were selected to attend the culminating summit in Atlanta. The day-long event included a mock interview competition, personal branding workshop and tour of the AT&T Technology Experience Center.

“We are proud to be associated with a program that focuses on giving students the skills to prepare for success in school and beyond,” said Resha Gadson, Women of AT&T Atlanta Chapter President.

All students received recognition for completion of the curriculum. Competition winners were recognized at the summit by Beth Shiroishi, AT&T Georgia President, Resha Gadson and Linda Bryant, Fulton County School Board Vice-President.
