Xylem Watermark & Project 24: San Isidro, Puerto Rico
Xylem Watermark supported Planet Water Foundation and Project 24, an ambitious undertaking to build 24 clean water filtration systems, bringing clean water to thousands of people in 24 hours.
San Isidro is one of the most populated barrios in Puerto Rico. However, the river valley location elevates the risks of flooding from the river and rainwater. A lack of drainage systems and limited sewage and water infrastructure create dangerous conditions when flooding occurs.
Last year, the community's lack of access to safe drinking water was made worse by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The water was turbid, and water treatment systems were not functioning. Water at the school is used for bathing and cleaning, but there is no confidence that it is safe for consumption.
Planet Water Foundation’s AquaTower system, supported by Xylem Watermark, will provide a vital resource to this resilient community to support their water needs as their rebuilding process continues.
“As a teacher and member of the community, I worry about the drinking water quality. When it goes out and then returns it is turbid and has a bad smell, so for that reason we buy bottled water. The tower will be beneficial for the community and students.” - Carmen River, Teacher
