World Legislators Highlight Need for Strong National Laws on Climate Change

Lawmakers from more than 100 countries gathered at the World Summit of Legislators in Mexico stressed upon the need to pass effective national laws to combat climate change. The summit prepared grounds for the upcoming 2015 UN climate negotiations in Paris, where a new international climate deal is anticipated. The legislators said that emission reduction promises made as a part of UN climate negotiations should be passed into national laws in order to ensure they are kept.

The summit leaders recognized that the traditional model of global negotiations by government officials was not working to reach an effective international agreement to curb climate change. The involvement of lawmakers could provide it the much-needed thrust. John Gummer, the president of the summit organizer GLOBE International, said that the crucial part is to press governments to improve their legislation in order for the UN climate deal in Paris in 2015 to work.
