World Environment Center Appoints Three Global Sustainability Leaders to its Independent Gold Medal Jury
The World Environment Center (WEC) is pleased to welcome three new jurors to its Gold Medal Award Jury. The WEC Gold Medal Award for International Corporate Achievement in Sustainable Development, now in its 33rd year, is a prestigious global accolade that recognizes sustainability excellence in an international company. Companies must apply for the award as part of a global competition, which culminates in the Gold Medal jury’s rigorous selection process to select a recipient.
The new jurors, all sustainability leaders, are Dick Bartelse of the Netherlands, Alice Korngold of the United States, and Clarissa Lins of Brazil. Mr. Bartelse is the recently retired Director of Procurement at AkzoNobel, Ms. Korngold is a respected business author, entrepreneur and governance analyst, and Ms. Lins, an economist and management analyst, is the Founding Partner of Catavento, an international consultancy.
These sustainability leaders join the following current Gold Medal jurors: Katherine Sierra (Chair), Former VP Sustainable Development at the World Bank and non-resident Senior Fellow at Brookings; Leslie Carothers, former President of the Environmental Law Institute; Dick Poduska, former vice president and Director of Health, Safety and Environmental Affairs at Eastman Kodak; and Robert Slater, professor of environmental policy at Carleton University.

The WEC Gold Medal Award is presented annually to a global company that has demonstrated successful integration of sustainability as a core part of its business practice, with commitment at all levels of the corporation; that has demonstrated its commitment to innovation to provide ground-breaking solutions in its industry to critical environmental and social challenges; and that has invested in global leadership to transform market conditions so as to accelerate progress toward a sustainable future. Recent winners include CH2M, SC Johnson, IBM, Unilever, Marks & Spencer and Coca-Cola.
Final applications for the 2017 Gold Medal cycle were due on October 28, 2016, whereupon the Jury will confer in December 2016 to select a finalist. The 2017 Gold Medal Colloquium and award ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.
