What Happens After the Millennium Development Goals?

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are eight broad goals with targets ranging from eradicating extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, all by 2015. They form a blueprint agreed to by all the world’s countries and all leading development institutions. They have galvanized unprecedented efforts to meet the needs of the globe’s poorest populations. Now, the United Nations (UN) is working with governments, civil society and other partners to build on the momentum generated by these Goals to carry on with an ambitious post-2015 development agenda. The UN’s Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says, “The Millennium Development Goals have been the greatest anti-poverty push in history. New partnerships have been established. New actors have been engaged. Now we must finish the job.”
