UPS Horizons: Listen, Learn, Lead

UPS Horizons | Sustainability Insights and Updates
Someone once told me that in order to lead, you must first listen and learn. I've taken that advice to heart since joining UPS three months ago – meeting with employees, visiting facilities and learning from those who have led sustainability on the front lines for decades. I've been inspired by UPS's leadership, most recently demonstrated by introducing groundbreaking range-extended electric vehicles in the UK, and investing in more than 6,000 natural gas-powered trucks to expand our fleet of alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles.
And continuing UPS's long-standing commitment to transparency, we issued our 17th annual Sustainability Report, Creating our Tomorrow, Sustainably. The digital-first, fully-interactive Report highlights 2018 initiatives that advanced sustainability for our communities, customers and across our own operations to create a more sustainable tomorrow.
While we're proud of these accomplishments, we know there is much more to do. Our business sits at the intersection of rapid urbanization and e-commerce growth, which are accelerating congestion, pollution and climate change. A range of stakeholders – from customers and employees, to environmental NGOs and local governments – are increasingly holding us accountable to address these issues.
I'm humbled by the opportunity to lead UPS's sustainability team and help shape what's next. But this work cannot be done in a silo. It will take all of us – UPSers as well as external stakeholders – to determine which aspects of UPS's global sustainability strategy we should continue, start or even stop. It will also require us to accept responsibility for the impacts we generate and continue collaborating with stakeholders to create new solutions that help solve our shared challenges.
As we explore the next generation of sustainability at UPS, I invite you to let us know where you think UPS should focus our efforts and how you'd like to get involved. Send your ideas to sustainability@ups.com.
