On April 2nd, FedEx released its seventh annual Global Citizenship Report (GCR), Moving PossibilitiesGlobal Citizenship at FedEx focuses on efforts to align business goals with citizenship objectives including economic development, community, people and the focus of this Twitter chat, environment.

Among the most notable accomplishments detailed in this year’s GCR, FedEx made significant strides in its commitment to environmental impacts, saving 100 million gallons of jet fuel at FedEx Express and avoiding more than 976,000 metric tons of carbon emissions. The accomplishments were results from FedEx® Fuel Sense and aircraft modernization programs.

Top FY14 accomplishments at FedEx, noted in the GCR, include:

  • FedEx® Fuel Sense has saved more than 334 million gallons of jet fuel and has avoided more than 3.25 million metric tons of CO2e emissions since 2007.
  • FedEx Express achieved 29.5% in cumulative fuel efficiency improvements across its entire vehicle fleet since 2005, just 0.5% shy of its goal for 2020.
  • In 2014, FedEx was once again recognized by the Solar Energy Industries Association as one of the top 25 solar-generating companies in the U.S., ranking 22nd by number of solar installations and 18th by generating capacity.

Mitch Jackson:

As Vice President of Environmental Affairs and Sustainability for FedEx Corporation, Mitch Jackson leads the strategic direction and provides vision for all aspects of the company’s sustainability initiatives and environmental innovations and technologies. In this role, Jackson also provides counsel on corporate projects to ensure they include an environmental and sustainability perspective that supports the company’s leadership role and eco-advantage. 

A passionate ambassador for sustainable solutions that support the business objectives, Jackson envisioned and pioneered the implementation of hybrid and electric vehicles in the FedEx fleet, and ultimately in commercial vehicles. Jackson was also instrumental in successfully securing first-ever national fuel economy standards and greenhouse gas requirements for commercial trucking. Under his influence and leadership, FedEx has taken a holistic approach to fleet management and fuel efficiency with a significant expansion in lower-polluting, higher-efficiency vehicles. Jackson was the key driver for the establishment of the first FedEx sustainability goals and has responsibility for current and future goals.

With more than 20 years of experience in the transportation industry, Jackson joined FedEx in 1985, and has experience in Operations, Engineering and Legal. In 2012 the British newspaper The Guardian named him as one of the top 15 sustainable business executives on Twitter. He was named one of the Top 100 Thought Leaders in business by Trust Across America for four consecutive years. In 2014 Green Fleet named Jackson a Sustainability All Star for his contributions to environmental sustainability and fleet efficiencies.

Jackson is currently a board member of the Shelby Farms Park Conservancy and serves on the American Trucking Association’s board of directors. He has served as environmental juror for the Heinz Awards and is a past chairman of the Global Environmental Management Initiative (GEMI). In addition, he is a former member of the Keep Tennessee Beautiful Governor’s Advisory Council and The Keystone Center’s National Energy Board.

Jackson earned his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Memphis and his master’s degree in Operations Management from the University of Arkansas. He currently resides in Memphis, Tennessee.

Holger Dalkmann:

Holger Dalkmann has fifteen years of experience working in the field of transport, sustainability and climate change. He joined WRI in 2011 as the Director for its EMBARQ program, which catalyzes environmentally and financially sustainable transport solutions to improve quality of life in cities. He currently provides strategic leadership and management for WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities' global staff and partners, as well as direction for its fundraising and communication activities. Holger comes to WRI with a strong background in business development, research, and policy in the transport and environment sectors. 

Formerly, he worked as Programme Director for Sustainable Transport and Climate Change at TRL, a world-renowned research and consultancy company with more than 450 people, where he was responsible for leading the business in his chosen field with a remit for business development, strategic planning and representation at the highest level.

During his professional career he has established a strong network in the field of transport, sustainable development and climate change multilateral development banks (World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Inter-American cooperating, working with key UN organisations like UNEP, UNESCAP, UNHABITAT, UNDESA and UNFCCC; Development Bank); foundations like Volvo Foundation, Nippon Foundation, Volkswagen Stiftung; bilateral aid organisations (German Technical Cooperation (GTZ)); private companies (automobile industry, public transport, rail industry); non-governmental organisations; and academia.

Through his work at TRL and for ten years at the Wuppertal Institute for Energy, Climate and Environment (Germany), a world respected think tank, Holger developed new areas of expertise and established his teams as centres of excellence (e.g. mobility management, public transport KPI, Strategic Environmental Assessment; Transport and Climate Change). The most recent success was founding the Bridging the Gap Initiative – a cooperation between different of organisations from aid agencies to private sector – which has provided a solid source for funding for TRL, as well as high level policy advice. He is also one of the co-founders of the Partnership on Sustainable Low Carbon Transport (SloCAT), where he is one of the driving forces in terms of network development, as well as intellectual and technical input.

Holger’s academic background allows him to overlook technical work in all areas of transport (from social behaviour and economics, to technical and planning background) as well as acting frequently as peer reviewer for academic journals, major publishers and for other institutions like ADB, GEF STAP. For the UNEP Green Economy Report, he is the lead author of the transport chapter. He enjoys mentoring key staff in managerial, networking competencies as well as developing technical expertise.
