Understanding Materiality for Corporate Social Responsibility
What is materiality? Materiality is a core concept for BNY Mellon’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy and reporting. It means BNY Mellon determines the most important CSR areas for its business, and then builds a plan, goals and connected programs focused on where it can have the greatest CSR impact.
In 2014, BNY Mellon refreshed its 2011 materiality assessment to ensure that it is focusing on the most important and relevant CSR areas for the firm. BNY Mellon’s core strategy continues to be comprised of three pillars: Market Integrity, Our People and Our World. Some areas of BNY Mellon’s CSR strategy have evolved as a result of the materiality refresh. The strategy and this year’s report incorporate an increased focus on risk, cultivating excellent talent, social finance and environmental management.
