Timberland Kicks off Earth Day Season with Greening Event in Zhongshan China
Earth Day service events planned in 27 cities around the globe for April and May
While associates at Timberland’s global headquarters in New Hampshire eagerly await the arrival of spring, employees in the brand’s Zhongshan, China production office got a head start on Earth Day by installing a colorful perennial bed at the Dongguan Botanical Garden in Guangdong, China. Tina Tong, a product developer in Timberland’s Zhongshan office, assembled a group of 67 volunteers to plant 3,000 perennials and shrubs, creating an inviting entrance for visitors to the park.
The Dongguan Botanical Garden is open to the public and offers city-dwellers of all ages a welcome respite from city life. The park features large open areas for walking and biking, woodland areas for hiking or a picnic, and a family-friendly children’s play area.
Tina is a member of Timberland’s Global Stewards Team, a group of passionate and dedicated employees who, in addition to their regular job responsibilities, drive service and sustainability in Timberland locations around the world. Through the brand’s award-winning Path of Service™ program, full-time employees receive up to 40 paid hours each year to serve in the community.
Earth Day has been a Timberland service tradition for 21 years, where employees worldwide pull on their boots to make a difference for the environment around the globe. “It’s exciting to serve locally and know that my contribution is part of a much larger series of events happening around the world,” said Atlanta McIlwraith, Timberland’s senior manager of community engagement and communication. “A shared sense of purpose to step outside, work together and make it better transcends borders and unites us as an employee community on Earth Day and every day.”
While the team in Zhongshan celebrated Earth Day early in the season, employees in other locations will serve at Earth Day projects throughout April and May, such as:
- Timberland volunteers from Asia will convene in China’s Horqin desert on April 22 to plant trees in Inner Mongolia’s Horqin Desert. Since 2001, teams of Timberland volunteers, in partnership with Japanese NGO Green Network, have planted over 2,000,000 trees to return the desert to the verdant grassland it was before over-population and over-grazing led to the desertification of the area.
- On May 8, at the brand’s EMEA headquarters in Stabio, Switzerland, 180 Timberland and VF associates will join forces to clear and restore a local park that was devastated by fire.
- On May 16, 300+ volunteers from Timberland’s global headquarters in New Hampshire will serve at five different Earth Day projects to improve local trail networks and outdoor learning spaces for local school.
