Tetra Tech Promotes STEM Around the World
Sharing our passion to help students spark an interest in science and engineering in 2017
Tetra Tech’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Program aims to help students at all levels—from kindergarten to graduate school—develop an interest in these four technical fields. Tetra Tech employees around the world complete classroom visits, conduct science activities, provide mentorships, and participate in a multitude of programs, including activities that focus on water, science careers, and motivating girls and young women to pursue STEM careers.
In 2017 Tetra Tech’s STEM Program reached 7,797 people from 4 countries. Our program continues to grow, enabling our employees to share their knowledge and spark a passion for science and engineering fields with students in our local communities.
We are pleased to highlight some of the activities that our employees around the globe participated in during 2017.
Middle School STEM Workshop, North Carolina
Tetra Tech employees in North Carolina led a workshop that introduced middle school girls to STEM careers. They discussed the water cycle and watersheds and conducted an experiment to demonstrate how pollution can affect natural resources. The workshop concluded with a discussion about pursuing a career in the water sector.
Robotics Team Presentation, Massachusetts
A Tetra Tech employee met with a local sixth grade robotics team from Wayland, Massachusetts, to answer questions regarding water resources in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Our employee presented about how the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia gets its drinking water primarily through the processes of distillation and reverse osmosis and discussed the use of solar power in this process.
Educational Water Event, British Columbia
In Parksville, British Columbia, Tetra Tech participated in a local water day event that encouraged environmental connection and awareness of local water resources. Our employees led children through a hands-on watershed activity and gave each child a copy of Tetra Tech’s Future Engineering: The Clean Water Challenge book.
ASCE Engineers Week, Virginia
As part of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Engineers Week 2017, environmental engineers from Tetra Tech’s Sterling, Virginia, office presented to local high school students about civil and environmental engineering as potential career paths. Our employees provided interesting, relatable examples of environmental projects Tetra Tech has worked on in the Washington, DC, metro area.
Marine Animal Workshop, Brazil
In São Paulo, Brazil, Tetra Tech employees worked with a local school to spark interest for the school’s youngest attendees—ages 4 to 6—in marine science. Our team read a book about marine animals, made presentations on how to protect the marine environment from garbage, and raised money to take the 150 children on a trip to the São Paulo Aquarium.
Sustainability Workshop, New York
As part of Green Apple Day of Service, Tetra Tech employees met with a group of students who were studying systems thinking and infrastructure to discuss the ways the environment is affected by buildings and infrastructure. Our employees discussed the challenges and opportunities architects and engineers face when using sustainable design.
