Tetra Tech to Discuss Solar Development on Landfills at WASTECON 2019
Presenting ways to reduce landfill post-closure operations and maintenance costs
Tetra Tech will join other leaders in the solid waste industry at WASTECON 2019 to share how we are Leading with Science® in municipal solid waste management.
Tetra Tech’s Drew Lent, solar services expert, will present “Phoenix Rising: Solar Development on Landfills” at WASTECON 2019. He will discuss typical solar landfill facility feasibility assessments, design components, permitting requirements, and long-term maintenance criteria. Drew will delve into the practical steps necessary for landfill owners to turn closed landfills into revenue-generating solar energy facilities.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and several states are actively promoting solar energy development on more than 10,000 closed landfills across the United States. By using a combination of promotions and incentives, more than 500 solar facilities have been constructed on landfills, with many more landfills available for solar development.
Closed landfills can be well suited for solar development when compared to other locations, since they typically have minimal shade; neighbors receptive to solar development; compatible zoning; and ready-made access to existing electrical grid infrastructure. Transforming these closed landfills into renewable energy project locations can create additional revenue for the owner and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
