Is “the Media” Failing in Reporting on Climate Change?
“Media” – for some of us, that means The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Fortune and Forbes. For others of us, especially the Millennium Generation, media is Twitter, the Comedy Central “news” with Steven Colbert and Jon Stewart; Facebook and “friends” reports; Reddit, and citizens’ comments; and other “new” or “social” media platforms. For some of us, there are hybrids – the Huffington Post, the newspaper of the Internet; Slate; Politico for news junkies; and other WWW platforms that bridge and blend traditional publishing and broadcast and “citizen” media outlets. The content – news and commentary – offered by “media” about climate change topics and vital issues is, of course, all over the place, as the definitions of media are fast-broadening. But tune in to the Top Story this week – it’s about “media and climate change.”
Journalists from the Huffington Post, the Guardian (UK liberal newspaper), and Mother Jones will gather at the South-by-Southwest (SXSW) Conference in Austin, Texas to discuss the topic of have the media failed us on climate change… Keep in mind that among those gathering Mother Jones can be very influential among print and broadcast media types. It’s liberal and left-leaning and crusading, continuing the American muckraker tradition (film maker Roger Moore was an editor). MJ takes on the pillars of respectability to speak truth to power. Mother Jones’s announcement of the Climate Desk-sponsored discussion sets out some of the failings of journalists in covering this big story of our time. The discussion will be live streamed and will look at why the “media” at large struggles when reporting on climate change. We will be watching for signs that this discussion among those that influence other media will result in changes in coverage of climate change issues and topics.
