“Poor but sexy”. The famous slogan created by former mayor Klaus Wowereit in 2004 has somehow come to define the German capital, even though gentrification over the last few years is quickly changing the cityscape, especially across swaths of East Berlin.

Poor is a loosely used word when applied to Berlin. Surely it doesn’t have the money that Munich and Hamburg have, the financial sector is in Frankfurt and public services tend to be less efficient than in the rest of Germany.

Berlin’s economy is largely based on tourism and creative businesses. More recently, the city has become a hub of digital start-ups, which are attracted to the city by cheaper rents and available talent. So, it’s true that the city is not home to big money sectors.
