ST. LOUIS, September 25, 2013 /3BL Media/ — Sigma-Aldrich Corporation (NASDAQ: SIAL), a leading Life Science and High Technology Company, was recently named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI), a list of corporate sustainability leaders from around the globe.  Companies listed in the DJSI have demonstrated best-in-class performance against numerous sustainability metrics.  Sigma-Aldrich is the only St. Louis-based company to be named to the list.

“Sigma-Aldrich is honored to be featured on the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices,” said Rakesh Sachdev, Sigma-Aldrich President and CEO.  “As a Company, Sigma-Aldrich is helping make the world a healthier, cleaner and safer place and one way we to do that is through solid sustainability practices.  We recognize the valuable impact being a better corporate citizen can have on our employees, our customers, our shareholders and the communities where we live and work.”

With the introduction of its GC1015 Initiative in 2010, which outlined seven sustainability goals the Company plans to achieve by 2015, Sigma-Aldrich has increasingly ramped up its efforts to reduce waste, energy and water usage and carbon emissions; to improve supply chain transparency; and to increase its greener alternative products offering and employee volunteerism around the world.

In 2012, Sigma-Aldrich reduced its absolute water usage for the second year in a row and also achieved an absolute reduction in natural gas usage helping to decrease overall energy intensity by 10% from baseline usage in 2010.  The Company also saw a 26% increase in employee volunteer hours and a 101% increase in charitable contributions from employees.

“Sigma-Aldrich has worked hard to adopt sustainable best practices and to weave those best practices into everything we do,” said Jeffrey Whitford, Global Citizenship Manager.  “We continue working to identify additional ways to improve our sustainability programs and are pleased to be recognized for our efforts.”
