The global head of citizenship and reputation is a new role at Barclays, and Diane Eshleman, formerly the bank’s global chief procurement officer, is the first to fill its shoes. But while the title is novel, the bank’s dedication to citizenship is not – charitable giving has been discussed right from the first documented Board meetings, and Barclays included longer-term public commitments in its 2012 annual report, Eshleman tells me.
“Over the past four years, we have made great strides to make our business more thoughtful to the world around us,” says Eshleman. And Barclays has plenty of evidence to back that statement as the first bank to launch a balanced scorecard – something Eshleman is very proud of – which aims to embed the right culture and become the go-to bank for all its stakeholders.
