SCE Procures 195 Megawatts of New Clean Energy Resources in Ventura, Santa Barbara Areas
Energy storage, demand response projects submit successful bids to meet customers’ local reliability needs by 2021.
ROSEMEAD, Calif., May 20, 2019 /3BL Media/ - Southern California Edison announced that it has signed seven contracts for 195 megawatts of battery-based energy storage resources to meet local capacity requirements in the Santa Clara sub-area of its electrical system.
Contracts were the result of SCE’s Aliso Canyon Energy Storage 2 Request For Offers and last year’s Local Capacity Requirements Request For Proposals. Both solicitations targeted clean energy resources connecting through the Santa Clara and Goleta substations to address local area reliability needs, and the Aliso Canyon Energy Storage 2 Request For Offers also more broadly targeted energy storage resources in Southern California.
“Unlike other solicitations to increase the generation capacity of the overall electric system, this solicitation specifically sought to meet local needs in the Moorpark area and address electrical energy storage needs related to restricted natural gas operations at Southern California Gas Company’s Aliso Canyon Natural Gas Field,” said Colin Cushnie, SCE vice president of Energy Procurement & Management. “SCE targeted clean energy resources through an accelerated competitive bidding to meet this identified need before summer 2021. The solicitation results also support SCE’s clean energy vision for California.
Selected contracts require California Public Utilities Commission approval. For more information on the solicitation and the selected resources, please review SCE’s filing.
Selected resources include demand response and energy storage resources types. No natural gas-fired resources were selected. One of the contracts awarded (100 MW), will become one of North America's largest operational lithium-ion battery systems when it comes online in December 2020.
