SC Johnson Named Recipient of 2012 SmartWay® Excellence Award by the United States Environmental Protection Agency
Award Recipients are Top Program Performers and Leaders for Freight Supply Chain Efficiency
RACINE, Wis., October 10, 2012, /3BL Media/ - SC Johnson was honored with a 2012 SmartWay® Excellence Award from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a leader in freight supply chain environmental performance and energy efficiency. This award is reserved for the top one percent of SmartWay Partners and is EPA’s highest recognition for demonstrated leadership in supply chain goods movement.
“We are honored to be recognized for our performance in EPA’s SmartWay program,” said Kelly M. Semrau, Senior Vice President, Global Corporate Affairs, Communication and Sustainability. “We are committed to doing what’s right for the environment across all levels of our operations and partnerships like this emphasize the importance of supply chain efficiency in helping reduce transportation-related emissions.”
Launched in 2004, SmartWay is an EPA program that reduces transportation-related emissions by creating incentives to improve supply chain fuel efficiency. As part of the SmartWay program, SC Johnson has achieved the following results:
- Converted all potential shipping lanes to intermodal, reducing the amount of CO2 output
- Implemented load building software to increase truckload utilization and reduce number of overall shipments/CO2
- Utilized empty miles of other companies’ private fleets, decreasing overall empty miles
- Used bio-diesel at SC Johnson’s largest manufacturing plant, Waxdale, for spotter trucks which are used to move trailers to and from warehouse dock doors from the trailer parking lot.
"EPA is pleased to recognize these SmartWay Partners with a 2012 Excellence Award. I commend SC Johnson for its leadership in moving goods efficiently and reducing the environmental impact of freight through the second generation SmartWay Transport Partnership," said Chris Grundler, Acting Director of EPA’s Office of Transportation and Air Quality. “Their commitment is helping lead the freight industry to a more sustainable future."
SC Johnson was one of 40 companies, representing less than one percent of the Partnerships’ nearly 3,000 Partners to receive this distinction. The award for truck and multimodal carrier Partners were announced at the American Trucking Association’s Annual Management Conference and Exhibition in Las Vegas. Shipper and logistic company Partners were recognized at the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals annual conference held in Atlanta.
