Sands for Singapore Assists in Deaf Awareness and Gift Preparation

Since 2013, Sands for Singapore has been supporting the local deaf community by working closely with one of Marina Bay Sands’ designated charities, Singapore Association for the Deaf (SADeaf).  The property has been privileged to support the association’s Sign Language Interpretation Fund, helping to triple the number of sign language interpreters that serve the deaf community.

"Our community is not only for the deaf and the hard of hearing,” SADeaf Executive Director Sylvia Teng said.  “Their relatives, their children, their siblings are also part of our extended family."

To raise awareness on issues facing the deaf community, Sands for Singapore, under Las Vegas Sands’ corporate giving program, Sands Cares, collaborated with SADeaf to organize multiple activities for Mother’s Day. Team Members got to learn simple sign language as well as partner with SADeaf beneficiaries to create and deliver painted tote bags to mothers from difficult backgrounds.  The painted totes also included a copy of Mommy, can you hear me?, a book written by Grace Phua, dedicating it to her deaf mother, Angela Lee.  Phua wrote the book which educates children about living with deaf parents.  MBS Team Members also attended the Mommy, can you hear me? launch sponsored by Sands for Singapore.  An additional 500 copies of the book will be distributed to libraries, childcare centers and kindergartens.

"It is our hope that Grace's story will help everyone gain a better understanding of the challenges and triumphs faced by children of deaf adults and more importantly, inspire everyone to overcome difficulties," MBS President and Chief Executive Officer George Tanasijevich said.
