In response to the Macau Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM) calling on the Macao community to help alleviate damage throughout the city caused by Typhoon Mangkhut, 60 volunteers from Sands China Ltd.’s (SCL) Sands Cares Ambassador program helped clean up Hac Sa beach, where they disposed of branches, debris, and helped shovel displaced sand back onto the beach. The company’s recovery work remains ongoing, and is part of Sands Cares, the global corporate giving and community engagement program of Las Vegas Sands.
“Sands China considers it our social responsibility as a Macao corporation to help the city recover after natural disasters like Typhoon Mangkhut,” said Winnie Wong, vice president of corporate communications and community affairs for Venetian Macau Limited. “It’s our role to share our resources to support the community to get back on its feet as quickly as possible.”
Before the storm hit, Sands Cares Ambassadors visited 16 live-alone elderly and disabled members of the Peng On Tung Tele-Assistance program to make preparations for the typhoon, including taping windows shut to minimize storm damage, and provided bottled water and essential food items. The Ambassadors returned after the storm to provide further assistance, sending Team Members from its facilities department to help with household repairs as needed.
The company also provided parking spaces for the General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macau (UGAMM), Fuhong Society of Macau, Caritas Macau, and Macau Special Olympics to park a total of eight buses at The Parisian Macao prior to Mangkhut’s arrival, to prevent damage to the vehicles. In addition, Sands Cares Ambassadors are teaming up with Caritas Macau to help deliver meal boxes prepared by Sands China for residents of the Elderly Centre at Illa Verde.
