Today, Symantec has published its 12th annual Corporate Responsibility Report. We are proud to share our 2019 CR Report, as it highlights the progress we’ve made in delivering on our CR commitments and the legacy of impact made possible by our dedicated CR team, executive champions, employee volunteers, consultants, and nonprofit partners.
Here are a few highlights from this year’s report:
Climate Impacts: Symantec is committed to climate action and is supporting the transition to a low-carbon future. In FY19, we reduced global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 18 percent. These strong results stem from office space consolidation, energy conservation projects, and migrating our data center operations to a more efficient cloud-based IT environment. Read more about our focus on the environment in our 2019 CR Report.
Diversity in Tech: We are celebrating the progress of our Symantec Cyber Career Connection (Symantec C3) program, which aims to address the significant shortage of qualified cyber security candidates and help change the trajectory of the tech workforce—specifically for women, minorities, and veterans. Working with leading educational nonprofits Year Up and NPower, Symantec C3 combines classroom-based training with meaningful hands-on internship experience and job placement support. Since 2014, 1,239 students have entered the training program with 84 percent of graduates working in cyber security or attending postsecondary education within six months of graduation. A Secure Tomorrow for Foster Youth: Symantec launched the Fostering a Secure Tomorrow (FAST) initiative in 2018 to help foster youth protect and restore their identities through education, tools, and identity restoration services. In FY19, we partnered with the Identity Theft Resource Center to conduct a trend analysis of foster youth age 14 and older in the United States, to better understand the impact of identity theft on foster youth. The survey found that, like most teenagers, foster youth are not checking their credit reports. Sixty-five percent reported that they did not access their credit report while in foster care and 78 percent of the youth surveyed were not confident in their ability to understand their credit report. Read more about how Symantec’s FAST program is helping to prevent young people from falling victim to identity theft in our 2019 CR Report.
Community Engagement: Symantec is committed to building a culture that enables our people to apply their time and talents to the issues they care most deeply about. A big part of this commitment is Global Service Week (GSW), a full week of service where employees join together to improve the communities where they live and work. This year we held the third annual GSW, and in just one week, more than 2,100 employees in 19 countries logged 9,579 volunteer hours. This is a 54 percent increase from 2017 efforts and we have more than doubled employee volunteer hours in just three years. Read more about how we support communities across the globe in our 2019 CR Report.
Supporting the nonprofit community through software donations: Since launching our software donation program in 2002, Symantec has helped more than 102,000 nonprofits and public libraries solve their biggest security challenges and protect against ever-evolving cyber security threats. In FY19, we worked with TechSoup to scale up our program from 56 to 236 countries, meaning tens of thousands more nonprofits can potentially benefit from our security products. Read more about how we help nonprofits secure their most important data in our 2019 CR Report.
This report is our presumed last report as both an Enterprise and Consumer cyber security company, due to our intention to sell our Enterprise assets to Broadcom. Despite this change to our business model, our mission to make the world a safer place and our commitment to corporate responsibility (CR), remains unchanged.
We encourage you to read our 2019 CR Report and to send us your feedback. We’d also like to thank our employees and partners for their dedication to corporate responsibility. Together we make an incredible impact and truly help create a more secure and sustainable world.
