Hand hygiene
As new and former healthcare workers are entering the workforce to meet increased demand, it's more important than ever to reinforce proper hand hygiene to control the spread of infectious diseases like COVID-19.
According to the World Health Organization’s “My 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene” approach, it is important to use hand sanitizers or wash hands with soap and water to maintain proper hand hygiene. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it is especially important to perform hand hygiene, including:
- Before and after all patient contact
- After contacting potentially infectious materials
- Before and after using personal protective equipment (PPE)
If hands are visibly soiled, they should be washed with soap and water. It is important to ensure that hand hygiene supplies are readily available to all personnel in every care location. By following the link below, you will find several resources addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, including a Healthcare specific flyer to reinforce proper hand hygiene techniques with new healthcare staff members.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated 2020 as the “Year of the Nurse and Midwife,” this World Hand Hygiene Day, Tork is celebrating nurses, midwives, as well as all front line healthcare staff who do significant contributions to society. This year, acknowledging the invaluable role these individuals have in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, feels particularly important.
While nurses continue serving on the front lines, there’s no better time for healthcare facilities to reinforce the importance of hand hygiene and sanitization, so that nurses can continue to perform their jobs as safely and effectively as possible and provide much-needed care to patients in dire need.
