Republic Services: Implementing Advances in Fleet Automation and Standardizing Truck Care

As the operator of the 8th largest vocational fleet in the country, Republic Services exercises the utmost responsibility in their operations, including their expansive fleet. Republic operates 16,000 recycling and waste collection vehicles that support 340 collection operations in 39 states and Puerto Rico.

Advances in Fleet Automation
Republic is investing in technologies that advance collection operations. New systems and automated capabilities maximize their fleet efficiencies while reducing their environmental impact. Approximately 72% of Republic’s residential routes have been converted to single driver, automated collection trucks, increasing efficiencies, reducing labor costs, improving driver productivity, and creating an overall safer work environment for their employees. Additionally, communities using automated vehicles have higher participation rates in recycling programs, thereby complementing their initiative to expand their recycling capabilities.

Reducing the Environmental Footprint with Standardized Truck Care
With OneFleet, Republic’s standardized vehicle maintenance program, they are minimizing variability in their maintenance processes. This results in higher vehicle quality and a lower environmental footprint, while also extending the average service life of their fleet by one year. They have implemented standardized maintenance programs for their entire fleet, creating a cleaner, safer and more reliable fleet to better serve their customers.
