May 21, 2013 /3BL Media/ - Hydro-Québec is one of the leading electric utilities in North America and ranks among the world’s largest hydropower producers.
Key 2012 achievements highlighted in the Sustainability Report 2012:
- 98% of the electricity generated by Hydro-Québec was from renewable sources.
- Net power sales outside Québec replaced thermal output, preventing 16 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, the equivalent of the annual emissions produced by 4 million vehicles.
- Energy efficiency: new savings of 1,059 GWh, surpassing the target of 744 GWh.
- Construction continued on the $6.5 billion Romaine hydropower complex, the second largest infrastructure project in Canada. The facility will start generating electricity by 2014. Environmental follow-up will continue until 2040.
- Rollout of Canada’s first electric vehicle public charging network. The Electric Circuit has nearly 150 charging stations installed in many of the partners’ parking lots.
- Hydro-Québec’s share of the Quebec economy is around 4% of the gross domestic product (GDP), excluding construction activities, research and development and its subsidiaries’ operations.
For its eleventh Sustainability Report, Hydro-Québec produced a self-declaration, checked by the GRI, corresponding to Application Level B+ of the Global Reporting Initiative’s G3.1 guidelines. Moreover, an external firm independently validated Hydro-Québec’s reported application of GRI G3.1 guidelines and AA1000 APS principles. The external firm also reviewed some of the data.
