June 28, 2013 /3BL Media/ - How are responsible businesses managing to deliver their sustainability programmes through the downturn?

The latest Sustainability Report www.co-operative.coop/sustainabilityreport from The Co-operative provides an in-depth review and analysis of the challenges that it has faced during what has been described as the one of the most dramatic periods in its recent history.

With a turnover of some £13.5bn and businesses engaged in food retail and banking, The Co-operative has been at the forefront of some of today’s most challenging corporate responsibility issues and this Report does not duck them.

What’s more, with 40 benchmarks, the Report also documents its performance against that of its sector peers on a range of critical issues from palm oil to Fairtrade sales and from social inclusion to diversity.

A pioneering approach to stakeholder engagement is core to its co-operative principles and the Report details how its approach to materiality is underpinned, time and again, by innovative stakeholder consultations.

The Report is consistent with GRI G3.1 guidelines, and is GRI checked to application level A+. It is independently assured using AA1000AS by Two Tomorrows; and Jonathan Porritt comments on the Report: “The Co-operative’s commitment to transparency, at a time when its stakeholders and members are expecting more and more in that regard, remains an inspiration.”
