(3BL Media) New York, NY - September 26, 2012 - The UN Global Compact today released Rio+20 Corporate Sustainability Forum: Overview and Outcomes, which outlines leading corporate practices in key sustainability areas and the wide spectrum of ideas presented at the Forum on innovations, collaborations and public policy recommendations. The summary report is released as global leaders from government, business and civil society convene in New York for the 67th session of the UN General Assembly.

The final report is based on the Rio+20 Corporate Sustainability Forum’s outcome document, which was presented to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on 21 June 2012, during the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20). The document identifies the most promising pathways to transform markets in fundamental ways that will contribute to a more sustainable world in areas including energy, climate, agriculture, social development and urbanization.

An appendix of approximately 200 commitments to action announced by corporate leaders is included in the report, which exemplifies a larger effort underway by thousands of businesses and other organizations at the leading edge of sustainability.

During the Forum, business leaders endorsed the call to be a part of the creation and promotion of new Sustainable Development Goals. The SDGs are central to the UN’s work to establish a post-2015 development framework as the targets of the Millennium Development Goals expire, which is at the heart of various discussions during this week’s General Assembly.

Held from 15-18 June in Rio de Janeiro, the Rio+20 Corporate Sustainability Forum gave business and investors an opportunity to meet with governments, local authorities, civil society and UN entities in over 100 focused workshops and thematic sessions linked to the Rio+20 agenda. The Forum aimed to bring greater scale and quality to corporate sustainability practices by highlighting innovative public-private partnerships, business contributions and new commitments.

The Forum summary report is accompanied by an Event Sustainability Report that addresses the environmental, social and economic sustainability of the Forum. Developed by WindMade and event management company MCI, key components of the event’s sustainability strategy include full compliance with the UN’s PaperSmart Guidelines; reduced local and overall emissions; and reduced waste and food miles.
