(3BL Media / theCSRfeed) New York, NY - December 22, 2011 - To help ensure children are properly nourished and therefore do not fall behind academically, the PwC Charitable Foundation, an independent 501(c)(3), made a $750,000 donation today to Feeding America. The donation is a 50 percent increase over last year’s commitment and complements the Charitable Foundation's partnership with Feeding America to advance youth education in communities around the nation.

The grant will go to support Feeding America’s Afterschool programs, including its signature program, Kids Cafe, which provides warm meals and academic enrichment opportunities for more than 122,000 low-income children at a variety of community locations around the nation.  Through this grant, Feeding America will:
  1. Develop case studies and toolkits to help member banks share best practices

  2. Build capacity and scale many of the existing 1,500 Kids Cafe sites

  3. Improve cross-collaboration and information sharing throughout the food bank member network

  4. Expand the program to new locations throughout the U.S.

"Now more than ever we need to find ways to alleviate obstacles to academic achievement and economic productivity," said PwC Charitable Foundation Board President Chris Simmons. "We know that when children are hungry, they are less likely to focus in the classroom. Thanks to the generosity of our people over the past year and Feeding America afterschool programs like Kids Cafe, we have a chance to effect real change in this area."   According to the USDA, in 2010 households with children reported food insecurity at a significantly higher rate than those without children, 20.2 percent compared to 11.7 percent. Children who are food insecure are more likely to have a decreased ability to learn and become productive citizens as adults.   “With help from our partners like PwC Charitable Foundation, we can help provide food for kids in need,” said Vicki Escarra, President and CEO of Feeding America. “Collectively, we can make a difference in the lives of children by enriching their minds, giving them a safe place to go after school and making sure they will not have to worry about where their next meal will be coming from.”   About The PricewaterhouseCoopers Charitable Foundation, Inc.
