PT Freeport Indonesia, an affiliate of Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., contributes over $39 million in 2012 to the Partnership Fund for Community Development for the indigenous Papuan Community

August 20, 2013 /3BL Media/ - In 1996, PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) established the Freeport Partnership Fund for Community Development (the ‘Partnership Fund’), through which PTFI has made available funding and technical assistance to support the economic, health, education and social development for the indigenous Papuan community. Through the Partnership Fund, PTFI has committed to provide one percent of its annual revenue for the development of the local community.

Contributions to the Partnership Fund in 2012 totaled $39.4 million. The Amungme and Kamoro Community Development Organization (LPMAK) is the local Papuan community organization that oversees disbursement of the program funds. LPMAK is governed by a board of commissioners and a board of directors, which are comprised of representatives from the local Amungme and Kamoro tribal communities, local government, church and other community leaders, and one representative of PTFI on each board. Since 1996, PTFI has contributed over $550 million to the Partnership Fund.

LPMAK has identified improving access to and quality of health care in the Mimika Regency as a key target for regional development. In 2012, LPMAK contributed $17.2 million to community health care programs, including the operation of two community hospitals as well as the implementation of a comprehensive public health program addressing HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria, mother and child health, and sanitation. LPMAK and PTFI have received national awards for their work in the area of Mother-Child Health, HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases.

PTFI works to address the need for local development and jobs by supporting community economic development programs, such as the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Development program. In 2012, funding contributed by PTFI to the Partnership Fund provided additional support to over 2,200 micro businesses that were engaged in a range of services, trade and home industry businesses.

The Amungme and Kamoro Community Development Organization recently celebrated its 17th anniversary with a thanksgiving event. LPMAK's 17th anniversary commemoration carried the theme of "Working for a Prosperous Society through Service and Sacrifice".
