Planet Pearson Environmental Award Winners Support Local Community

(3BL Media / theCSRfeed) September 29, 2011 - Pearson plc held our inaugural Planet Pearson Environmental Awards in May this year, recognising and rewarding staff who show exceptional commitment to reducing our impact on the environment. 

Members of the judging panel - drawn from senior operations executives around Pearson and chaired by Robin Freestone, Board member for corporate responsibility - were not quite sure what to expect from the first year of these awards, but were very pleased with both the range and quality of the applications.
  Pearson is very proud of all the winners - each recipient is achieving real change, either in making Pearson more eco-efficient or by getting involved in green issues in their communities. Examples ranged from pioneering the use of Forest Stewardship Council labelling on books within Penguin Group UK, to making Pearson's first wind turbine a reality at our Pearson North America offices in Owatonna, Minnesota.   The trio who made up the driving force behind the building of the wind turbine in Owatonna - Rick Lent, Tom Karnauskas and Jeff Samples - were recently mentioned in the local Owatonna news, following Pearson's $2000 donation to Cannon River Watershed Partnership on their behalf.
  Award recipients each received $500 (or local equivalent) from Pearson in recognition of their achievement and a $2000 contribution from Pearson to their chosen environmental cause. A further five applicants received special commendation.
