Improving access to healthcare globally is a pressing societal challenge.

September 26, 2013 /3BL Media/ – On 24 September, Business for Social Responsibility (BSR), together with CEOs from 13 pharmaceutical companies, released a new set of Guiding Principles on Access to Healthcare (GPAH). The principles are an industry-led call for more cross-sector collaboration to expand access to quality healthcare. The initiative supports the post-2015 development agenda through this common framework to shape viable global health goals. The GPAH were launched in conjunction with the United Nations General Assembly meetings taking place in New York City.

Novo Nordisk has been involved in developing the GPAH through the company’s participation in the BSR Healthcare Working Group and will contribute with best practices of how the principles can be put into action.

“We commend the commitment and effort of BSR to bring the pharmaceutical industry together to create a joint framework on access to healthcare,” says Charlotte Ersbøll, corporate vice president, Global Stakeholder Engagement, Novo Nordisk. “Improvement is needed to ensure access to healthcare for all and cross-sector collaboration is an obvious answer to make sure this happens.”

BSR’s Healthcare Working Group developed the principles, which build on the experience and lessons learned from cross-sector partnerships that help improve access to medicines and vaccines for areas as diverse as HIV/AIDS, diabetes, neglected tropical diseases, and childhood immunization.

Novo Nordisk has contributed three company case studies to help make the GPAH tangible and to support sharing of best practices. The company’s case studies include the Base of the Pyramid Innovation Project, Differential Pricing Policy for Least Developed Countries and the Changing Diabetes® in Children programme.

Novo Nordisk’s case studies can be found at http://gpah.bsr.org/en/case-studies.
