A Night of Inspiration: An Environmental and a Social Visionary Share Their Stories

Jan 13, 2016 10:20 AM ET

At the next TSSS event on February 4th you will learn how two relentless visionaries made their dreams a reality.

Robert Shirkey, founder of Our Horizon, is an eco-visionary who saw gasoline pumps as an opportunity to change the conversation about how each of us contributes to climate change; “What if we added a message right on the gas pump like the way we do with cigarettes”?

Paul Klein, founder at Impakt is a social visionary who passionately chose to tackle the nagging social problem of youth homelessness and unemployment. In November 2015 Paul and his team at Impakt launched HireUp – the world’s first national job portal for youth who have experienced homelessness.

  • What prompted both Robert and Paul to tackle these issues
  • What were their strategies for addressing such large challenges
  • What were the biggest surprises that they encountered along the way
  • Whether they ever felt like it wasn’t going to happen and what kept them going
  • What was the the key to their project’s success

Also joining us to launch his new book, “Can the World be Wrong?” will be Doug Miller, Founder of GlobeScan. The book lays out a compelling case for looking to long-term trends in global public opinion to help predict the future. It goes on to outline the future these trends suggest. Doug will be sharing insights from his book and signing copies for audience members.

“We are living in uncertain times. My radical proposition in the book is that when humans are involved and given voice, everything is possible, including achieving our highest aspirations and best intentions.”

He has given lectures on the topic across North America and has been featured in media all over the world. His proposal has been endorsed by over a hundred academics and leaders in various disciplines from universities across North America. City and town councils across Canada have voted in favour of the concept and several U.S. cities are also pursuing the idea too. The idea is now being implemented in several communities on Canada’s west coast. Media outlets across North America are calling these historic global firsts. Rob is currently building a massive database of politicians’ emails to share these examples of leadership with the world.

Rob is a lawyer from Toronto, Canada. Prior to founding Our Horizon and launching its unique approach to addressing climate change, Rob operated a private practice in downtown Toronto. He also has experience as an Assistant City Solicitor and Prosecutor. Before completing his law degree, Rob studied business, economics, and psychology at the undergraduate level.
