National Grid Responds to Administration's Announcement to Regulate Methane Emissions
March 17, 2016 /3BL Media/ - National Grid issued a statement today responding to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) recent announcement that it would develop methane regulations for existing oil and gas sources. The EPA intends to begin outreach to states, industry, environmental groups, and other stakeholders in the coming weeks and launch a formal Information Collection Request process in April.
“National Grid supports the Administration’s 2025 climate goal to lower methane emissions by 40 to 45 percent,” said Dean Seavers, president of National Grid, U.S. “As a national leader developing new methane reduction strategies, we remain deeply committed to this effort.”
“We are also pleased to be a founding member and partner with the EPA to develop the Methane Challenge Program,” Seavers continued. “This latest endeavor aligns with our Environmental Defense Fund and Google collaboration to launch a transparent, web-based methane emissions mapping tool. Such tools have allowed us to be one of the first local distribution companies to aggressively invest in technologies that will quantify emissions to combat climate change.
We will continue coordination with One Future, American Gas Association, the Gas Technology Institute, NYSEARCH and other institutions of higher learning to scientifically study and research system-wide methane emissions as matter of environmental sustainability and climate change mitigation.”
