National Grid Earns Emergency Response Awards From Edison Electric Institute
Awards Recognize Efforts to Restore Service After Storms Hit New York
January 10, 2018 /3BL Media/ - National Grid has received Edison Electric Institute’s Emergency Assistance and Emergency Recovery awards for its response to damaging thunderstorms and tornadoes that struck the upstate New York region in May and July 2017.
The awards are presented to EEI member companies to recognize extraordinary efforts to restore power to customers after service disruptions caused by severe weather conditions or other natural events. The winners were chosen by a panel of judges following an international nomination process, and the awards were presented during EEI’s Winter Board and Chief Executives Meeting in Scottsdale, Az.
On May 18, severe thunderstorms hit central and eastern New York producing a macroburst with winds estimated to be as high as 90 mph. The storms caused 68,874 electric service outages. National Grid crews restored service to all customers within just two days, dedicating 24,600 man-hours to recovery efforts.
National Grid rose to a challenge again on July 20, when a damaging series of thunderstorms and tornadoes rolled through western New York. Crews quickly responded to neighboring utility Avangrid’s request for assistance with recovery operations in the area. National Grid crews braved hazardous conditions to help restore power to more than 30,000 customers, dedicating 6,880 man-hours to recovery efforts.
“The tireless work by National Grid crews during the macroburst in May, as well as a series of thunderstorms and tornados in July exemplifies our industry’s commitment to customer service,” said EEI President Tom Kuhn. “National Grid crews worked diligently to safely restore service to customers, and are very deserving of this award.”
