MilliporeSigma Makes an Impact With 'STEMpact' on Science Education
In Missouri, three out of the four fastest growing occupations are in STEM careers.
To help students prepare for STEM careers and close the education gap, MilliporeSigma localized partner STEMpact is working to transform STEM education and provide resources to teachers and schools in the St. Louis, Missouri area.
Both organizations recently welcomed 32 teachers from Washington University STEM Teacher Quality Institute—a program that fosters a strong mindset for STEM integration into every teachers’ curriculum—to a virtual workshop. The educators learned about MilliporeSigma’s science education programming and how they can embody STEMpact’s mission of becoming STEM-capable teachers and seeing their students as STEM-capable learners.
In addition to viewing a virtual tour of MilliporeSigma’s Laclede site in St. Louis, the teachers also received a virtual, inside look at MilliporeSigma’s Curiosity Cube®, a 22x10-foot, retrofitted shipping container turned mobile science lab. Since 2017, the Curiosity Cube has journeyed across North America, visiting nearly 300 communities, and reaching more than 114,500 visitors at schools, summer camps, and public spaces, including parks, festivals and museums, to help foster engagement in science and an interest in STEM-based careers.
MilliporeSigma also led teachers through a first-hand experience of one of its Curiosity Labs™ lessons, which engages students with hands on, inquiry-based learning, and shared different career paths in STEM fields through a panel discussion and Q&A with MilliporeSigma employees.
One teacher from the STEM Teacher Quality Institute described the event as a “great opportunity to meet different people and observe behind the scenes.” Over 50% of the participants said they learned something new and were able to see connections between STEM learning and the classroom.
