Medtronic Receives Honor for Corporate Citizenship
As a global healthcare leader, Medtronic is putting its size and scale behind making a positive impact on society. That work has gained recognition by Corporate Responsibility Magazine, who ranked Medtronic 44th on its 19th annual 100 Best Corporate Citizens List for 2018.
“Medtronic is committed to being an exemplary social citizen in all the communities we serve across the world,” said Medtronic Chairman and CEO Omar Ishrak. “We are determined to make an impact by fulfilling our Mission of using technology to alleviate pain, restore health and extend the lives of patients. With 84,000 colleagues around the globe, we are working every day to create a better, healthier world for patients, communities, and the environment.”
More than 70 million people around the world benefited from Medtronic technology, services, and solutions last year.
The 100 Best Corporate Citizens List reviews environmental, social and governance data of public companies across the United States in seven categories: environment, climate change, employee relations, human rights, governance, finance, and philanthropy and community support. Medtronic provides an annual transparent overview of these types of social and environmental impacts in an integrated sustainability report.
Highlights from the Medtronic FY17 Sustainability Report include:
- Investing $2.2 billion in research and development, representing 7.4 percent of net sales
- Launching Medtronic Labs, a new initiative designed to deliver financially sustainable businesses that expand access and reduce health inequality in emerging markets
- Investing $139.7 million in capacity building and training for medical professionals and $22.6 million in patient education
- Donating $101.8 million to charitable causes through corporate cash contributions, giving through the Medtronic Foundation, product donations, and employee volunteering
- Investing more than $76 million in employee training and development programs
- Achieving four out of five of our 2020 Environmental Performance Goals, including reductions in energy, emissions, waste, and water

The sixth tenet in the Medtronic Mission, unchanged for nearly seven decades, is to maintain good citizenship as a company.
