Bacardi's new lightweight bottle for its Martini Asti sparkling wine brand is expected to deliver annual energy savings equivalent to taking 330 cars off the road.
The drinks company has been working on a redesign since 2010 and has now managed to shave almost two ounces (57 grams) in weight off the bottle design.
Simona Filosi, senior packaging developer at Martini, said the new Asti bottle keeps the same external shape and does not compromise safety.
"We are talking about a bottle for sparkling wine that involves quite a bit of liquid pressure inside," she said. "Today, when you compare the old and new bottles side by side, you cannot tell any difference in terms of shape. However, by reducing the glass weight, we reduce the energy required to make the bottles."
