Major League Baseball Players Trust to Live Below the Line in support of Physicians for Peace and other nonprofits

From April 27 through May 1, the Major League Baseball Players Trust is joining forces with The Global Poverty Project’s Live Below the Line campaign to raise awareness and funds for the more than 1.2 billion people around the world living in extreme poverty (Learn more here.).  

Through the Players Trust, Major Leaguers provide funding to support the work of several non-profits dedicated to helping improve the lives of people living below the poverty line. One such partner is Physicians for Peace.   

Through its  partnership with Physicians for Peace, the Players Trust is transforming the lives of impoverished populations in the Dominican Republic, Haiti and the Philippines by funding programs that help train, support and empower healthcare professionals. 

Since 2011, the Players Trust has provided more than $200,000 in grants to Physicians for Peace.

A $46,570 grant in 2014 funded two week-long training programs at Unidad De Quemados Dea, a children’s burn unit in Santiago. These training sessions provided colleague-to-colleague instruction on best practices, enhanced patient care, and the inclusion of parents in the patients’ nutritional and physical therapy needs.

In the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, a Trust grant of $75,000 helped Physicians for Peace  address the overwhelming medical needs of the Philippines’ disabled population, including those who struggled with access to consistent, quality medical care prior to the storm as well as the newly disabled as a result of the storm. 

That money is being used to:
•    Establish two prosthetic and orthotic (P&O) clinics at government hospitals; 
•    Provide ongoing resource and training for existing PFP- supported clinics; and 
•    Provide prosthetic and orthotic services and rehabilitative care in remote communities which lack the financial resources and infrastructure to support a clinic.

Additionally, the Trust grant is continuing to support education and training for in-country rehabilitation professionals in the Philippines and training in basic rehabilitation care for healthcare providers working at the community level. 

Another grant to PFP in 2013 provided a unique fun-filled learning and summer camp experience for Haitian disabled orphans residing at St. Vincent’s Center for Handicapped Children; it also provided ongoing technicians and rehabilitation professionals with training to set up a new prosthetics and orthotics clinic at St. Vincent’s.
