Lincoln Financial Foundation Awards $170,000 in Grants to Hartford Area Nonprofits
Hartford, Conn., October 2, 2013 /3BL Media/ – Grants from Lincoln Financial Foundation are supporting Hartford agencies that feed the hungry, address homelessness, provide winter fuel assistance and other needed services to adults and children at risk. Lincoln Foundation recently awarded $170,000 in human services grants to 12 local nonprofit agencies, a portion of almost $804,000 in charitable funds the foundation has allocated for Hartford in 2013.
Chrysalis Center received $10,000 for its Veterans Support Services. Chrysalis Center provides supportive housing services to homeless veterans who suffer from mental illness, substance abuse and other disabilities. The center helps them remain housed, regain a sense of commitment to the community, and access recovery support services. The veterans receive support to find, obtain and maintain safe, decent and affordable housing and acquire furnishings; submit applications for entitlement benefits; manage physical and mental healthcare; and provide job training, education and linkage to employment resources. The employment training program provides middle-skills trades training, such as forklift certification, welding, safety training, emergency response and culinary training. Chrysalis Center currently provides Veterans Supportive Services to 59 veterans and their families and middle-skills trades training to 36 veterans.
Other human services grants awarded include:
- $30,000 to Easter Seals Capital Region and Eastern Connecticut to provide autism services for Latino children, addressing the significant under-identification and delayed diagnosis of autism within Hartford’s Latino community.
- $30,000 to Foodshare for its Fight Hunger at the Holidays program, meeting emergency food assistance needs during November and December, as well as support for its year-round food program.
- $20,000 to HARC for family and community safety net services for individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families.
- $20,000 to Mercy Housing and Shelter for its St. Elizabeth House programs, providing an array of services to the homeless in Hartford, including meals, day shelter and family services.
- $15,000 to Hartford Interval House for the New Beginnings Shelter and Children’s Program, which provides 1,600 victims of domestic violence each year with a 24-hour hotline and emergency shelter.
- $10,000 to American Red Cross, Connecticut Chapter, to fund emergency services that include planning and preparedness, response and relief efforts, and community disaster education.
- $10,000 to Loaves & Fishes Ministries to support its soup kitchen program and related services for families, providing more than 138 meals each day to the hungry.
- $10,000 to Operation Fuel for emergency fuel assistance to households that cannot pay utility or fuel bills, but are ineligible for, or have exhausted, government energy assistance benefits.
- $5,000 to the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation to provide individuals who are visually impaired with a guide dog and personalized one-to-one in-community training, leading to increased freedom and independent mobility. Funding also supports the volunteer puppy raisers, who provide a loving environment, training and socialization to prepare pups for guide dog work.
- $5,000 to Hands on Hartford to support the MANNA Community Pantry, which provides fresh food as well as nutrition education and homeless prevention services for pantry participants.
- $5,000 to YWCA of the Hartford Region to support the work of its 24-hour emergency shelter, which provides homeless women with long-term shelter and case management.
