Spreading Knowledge to Stop TB in India

Today’s guest blog comes from Sunita Prasad, senior manager for Lilly’s MDR-TB programs in India.

India is making steady progress against tuberculosis. But we have a long way to go before the investments we are making translate into measurable public health gains. As one health officer in Vadodara, Dr. M. T. Chari, recently put it, “Though there has been no significant increase in cases of tuberculosis, there has also not been any significant decrease.”

I’m truly encouraged by the leadership we’re seeing in India’s private sector to accelerate these efforts. Notably, the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India, or Assocham, has launched a new TB awareness-raising campaign called “Getting to Zero Death.” The organization, which represents over 400,000 large, medium and small-scale industrial units, is collaborating with the Ministry of Health’s Central TB Division and the Improving Healthy Behaviors Program (IHBP) to educate people through camps at industrial sites that encompass communities living in the surrounding areas.
