Lansing regional General Motors plants and GM Foundation award $20,000 grant to American Cancer Society

(3BL Media) September 4, 2012 - Working in partnership the the General Motors Foundation, two Lansing-area GM plants awarded a grant to the local American Cancer Society last week, according to a media release.

"We are lucky to have local charitable organizations that put their hearts into making life here a little better for all of us each and every day," Carol Parr, GM Lansing Regional Personnel Director, said in a statement. "The GM Lansing team knows how to build quality vehicles. However, we couldn't be successful without the support of the Lansing community. We are pleased to be able to help in this way so they cancontinue their good work."   

General Motors owns and operates two plants in the Lansing area, the Lansing-Grand River Assembly Plant and the Lansing-Delta Township Assembly Plant.

The funds will support the American Cancer Society Great Lakes Division's work in breast cancer research, local programs and services for breast cancer patients, and early detection education, according to the media release.

"Our work depends on the generosity of individuals and organizations such as the General Motors Foundation," Mark Heffner, director of the American Cancer Society Mid-Michigan Office in East Lansing and East Michigan Office in Flint, said in the release. "Every donation helps us to deliver free patient programs and services, education and early detection messages, as well as conduct research to find a cure for this disease. I am overwhelmed by their support, which allows us to helpbreast cancer patients right here in the Capital Area to celebrate more birthdays."

In total, the GM Foundation will provide more than $1 million in funding to nearly 200 organizations in 43 plant cities where GM employees live and work in an effort to build strong communities and enrich the lives of its neighbors, according to the release.

The GM Foundation was formed in 1976. Since then, it's donated millions of dollars to charities, educational organizations and worldwide disaster relief efforts.

The foundation is funded solely by GM; the last donation to the fund from the automaker was in 2001.

The Lansing-Grand River Plant recently celebrated the launch of the all-new Cadillac ATS.
