Of the committed homes, the first two were delivered on Monday December 20th, with the second two being delivered on Tuesday, December 21st.

Recently, Western Kentucky was hit hard by tornados and a number of towns such as Mayfield and Dawson Springs lost over 75% of their homes. Many families remain homeless and devasted. Land Betterment’s ekō housing division, which had four fully-manufactured homes in Alabama which were originally scheduled to move to the Company’s ekō Village of Pike in eastern Kentucky’s Pike County. However, these sustainable container homes are now destined for a better cause. Over the last four days, the Land Betterment team along with its manufacturing partner, CSI Inc. has worked with the town of Dawson Springs to mobilized, deliver and set up the ekō homes. The ekō homes are being set up on a designated site in Dawson Springs and will have power, water and sewage connection. Additionally, each home will have a Christmas tree with the hopes that these families will be able to wake up in a home on Christmas morning. The goal is for Land Betterment to enable these families to live in these homes for six months with no rent to help them stand on their feet again.

Mark Jensen, Executive Chairman of Land Betterment commented, “As a company and individually, when we saw the devastation left behind by the storms and the urgent need in the area, we knew we needed to act quickly. People need homes for the foundation of their family. We have a great team that is passionate, thoughtful and possesses an immense amount of energy to find solutions to complex problems. I am so proud of every single member of our team for their efforts and contributions which have enabled us the opportunity to help this area in need during this challenging time. I was able to speak to Mayor Smiley of Dawson Springs on Friday night, by Monday morning Pete Rodriguez of our team had the first home set and ready to be plumbed and wired to be lived in!” Jensen continued, “I would like to thank Mayor Chris Smiley, Judge Executive Jack Whitfield and also Judge Executive Adam Onan, Rusty Ashcraft and David Moss who have helped coordinate this effort of getting our ekō homes in place in so quickly.”

Land Betterment with its partner, CSI, has been building ekō homes to provide a more sustainable and better quality of home versus the traditional trailer or small-home environment. Land Betterment’s ekō housing division is developing community villages that offer residents with sustainable, high-end, cost-effective container-based homes designed to bring a new, safe and more efficient housing option to the Appalachian region’s transitioning economy.

“Beyond safe and stable housing villages for communities under transition, the ekō solution is powerful across many fronts,” stated Land Betterment’s Chief Development Officer Thomas Sauve. “The flexibility and efficiency of the ekō platform allows for rapid deployment of various dwellings beyond housing as we are doing in Dawson Springs. Further iterations will allow for medical units, support units allowing internet connectivity, community kitchens and mobile offices,” Mr. Sauve further commented.
