Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
An exciting new project to develop an environmentally and economically sound wind farm that will provide renewable energy to be used locally and exported to the national grid is well underway in South Australia.
Hornsdale Wind Farm - situated North of Jamestown in the locality of Hornsdale about 3 hours’ drive from Adelaide - will generate approximately 1,050,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of clean, renewable electricity into the national power grid each year, thereby significantly reducing Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions.
These reductions will be equivalent to either taking 290,000 cars off the road or planting 1,900,000 trees, and will also contribute to the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) government's target of 90% renewable energy by 2020.

Siemens partnered with NEOEN - the French renewable energy producer and owner of the Hornsdale Wind Farm - to provide a turnkey solution. The contract includes the commissioning of 32 direct drive wind turbines, associated civil and electrical infrastructure engineering, and a long-term service contract.
The project is also underpinned by a 20-year contract to supply green energy to the ACT at a fixed price of 9.2 Australian cents per kilowatt hour (kWh).
The electricity generated from each turbine is transmitted via underground cabling or overhead transmission line to a central cable marshalling point at the onsite substation. The substation then connects directly into the National Electricity Transmission Grid.
After commissioning, the Hornsdale wind power plant is expected to produce over 400 gigawatt hours (GWh) per year – an amount of energy equivalent to one fifth of the ACT’s annual electricity consumption.
This project will support the Renewable Energy Centre of Excellence at the Canberra Institute of Technology by creating opportunities for employment, training and investment in both the ACT and South Australia. It will also provide benefits to the Hornsdale community for the life of the project.
