Help at Hand to Understand GRI's Waste Standard
Webinars on the new globally applicable tool for managing waste impacts
June 2, 2020 /3BL Media/ - Following the launch of a standard that enables organizations to minimize waste impacts, two virtual events are taking place to highlight how companies can make the most of this global best practice for waste reporting – and how it can unlock circularity benefits.
GRI 306: Waste 2020 published on May 19, following a two-year process to develop a disclosure standard focused on a complete picture of waste impacts. It is now available as part of the GRI Standards – the world’s most widely used framework for sustainability reporting – and has already been downloaded almost 3,000 times since launch.
GRI is delivering the following live and interactive webinar sessions, for which places can be booked now.
A waste standard for the post-pandemic world (June 9)
- How COVID-19 has impacted waste management globally – and the role of the new Waste Standard to enable transparent reporting and stakeholder engagement
- Expert input from Dr. Anne Scheinberg (Working Group Chair, International Solid Waste Association), Lisa Beauvilain (Head of Sustainability & ESG, Impax Asset Management) and Anna Krotova (Manager, GRI Standards Division)
Waste reporting: a gateway to the circular transition (June 11)
- The importance of circularity for business resilience, the key role of waste reporting and the tools and resources available to help
- Contributions provided by Jarkko Havas (Lead of Data and Metrics, Ellen MacArthur Foundation), Carolien van Brunschot (Manager Circular Economy, WBCSD) and Anna Krotova (Manager, GRI Standards Division)
As Tim Mohin, GRI Chief Executive, explains:
“The new GRI Waste Standard is about fundamentally challenging the perception of waste, from an unwanted residue to a valuable resource. GRI 306 provides universally applicable best practice that raises ambition for circularity, enabling any organization to critically assess their waste generation and be a driver for improvement.”
Peter Bakker, President and CEO, World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) added:
“We are supportive of initiatives that help companies disclose consistent, comparable and material information on environmental, social and governance issues so markets receive effective information on the sustainability performance.
The updated GRI Waste Standard will help companies do that for waste generation through prevention approaches and the adoption of circularity measures – driving companies towards quantitatively measuring their circular performance and is consistent with the approach taken in WBCSD’s Circular Transition Indicators.”
The new GRI Waste Standard was developed by a multi-stakeholder expert working group and underwent global consultation.
The June 11 webinar will include advice on the GRI Waste Standard alongside the Cirulytics tool provided by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the WBCSD’s Circular Transitions Indicators.
Since publishing on May 19, GRI 306: Waste 2020 has been downloaded 1,231 times individually and 1,731 as part of a consolidated set of the GRI Standards.
