Gold Mining Consortium Donates Six Gold Bars to the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation
November 15th marks National Philanthropy Day in Canada, an annual day celebrating philanthropy and the difference charity makes to the world. Last month, Goldcorp, along with eight other mining companies, made a unique donation of six gold bars to the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto. The consortium was comprised of Goldcorp, Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd., Barrick Gold Corporation, IAMGOLD, Kinross Gold Corporation, New Gold Inc., Primero Mining Corp., Silver Wheaton Corp. and Yamana Gold Inc.
Ian Telfer, Goldcorp’s Chairman and a former cancer patient at Princess Margaret, presented the centre with the six bars on October 15, 2014. Weighing a total of 2,400 troy ounces, the six donated gold bars were valued at approximately $3.28 million. During his speech, Telfer commended the staff for their care and spoke positively about the treatment he received while at Princess Margaret after being diagnosed with throat cancer last year.
The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is one of the top five cancer research centres in the world. Founded in 1952, it has since gained an international reputation for being a global leader in the fight against cancer. The gold bar donation is part of the Princess Margaret’s “Billion Dollar Challenge”, a campaign to raise $1 billion by 2017. The campaign was launched in 2012 and has already raised $579 million. The $3.28 million donation will aid in expanding and upgrading the cancer centre.
Partnerships and contributing lasting benefits to the communities where we work are an important part of Goldcorp’s culture and values. Together, creating sustainable value.
