GLBT Network Uses Crowdsourcing To Promote Social Justice
Grindr is one of the latest success stories of digital businesses that cater for the GLBT community. It has more than three million users that benefit from Grindr's geo-social network app to connect to local, male members of the community. Since its launch in March 2009 Grindr has become a global phenomenon, reaching users in 192 countries.
Now the company has launched Grindr for Equality to raise awareness of GLBT issues and spur action across the globe. Grindr's aim is to leverage its geo-targeting software and massive global user base to contact people in specific geographic areas en masse. This has included participation in recent GLBT campaigns such as the overturning of Proposition 8 and the recent passage of marriage equality in New York State.
"There is strength in numbers and Grindr for Equality will enable our users to use our platform for the greater good of our community," said Joel Simkhai, Founder and CEO. "In today's world, the power of social networks and location-based mobile technologies are playing a major role in political change and social awareness. We want to continue that momentum and get more people involved. We're asking people to sign up, send us submissions regarding issues they care about and become advocates for the GLBT community."
