Freight and Transport Companies Rapidly Investing in Biofuels

Biofuels are emerging as a credible alternative that can help reduce the dependence on fossil fuels. Biofuels are an important key to decelerating climate change and improving global fuel security. The U.S. currently leads the world in biofuel investments. More than 13.3 billion gallons of ethanol was produced in the U.S. in 2013, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Earlier this month, UPS made an agreement to buy up to 46 million gallons of renewable diesel over the next three years from the energy companies Nestle, Renewable Energy Group, and Solazyme. The agreement is central to the company’s plan to displace 12 percent of the petroleum-based fuels in its ground fleet by 2017.
