Freeport-McMoRan Helps Lay Foundation for New Wharf Facilities in Chile

October 21, 2013 /3BL Media/ - The construction of wharf facilities in Coliumo, Chile – a $2.5 million project funded by Freeport-McMoRan – marks the much-anticipated next chapter for some 420 small-scale fishermen who depend on the amenities for their livelihood.

The fishing community suffered damage in February 2010 when the region was hit by an 8.8-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami. Freeport-McMoRan committed $5 million to support a two-phase project to help in the recovery efforts. Phase one of the project included repairing boats and donating 242 others, as well as donating 506 engines to local fisherman. Building the wharf facilities in Coliumo moves the project toward phase two of the Company’s commitment.

Current construction plans include building an esplanade, ramp for loading and unloading boats, a parking lot, a cafeteria and a space for people to sell seafood to the community.

Coliumo is located in the region of Bio Bío, known as one of the most productive for small-scale fishing with close to 22,500 registered fishermen who represent 25 percent of the fishing registry.
