'Farming' the Issues at Rio+20
Of the many issues being ‘framed’ in the formal and informal dialogues taking place at Rio+20, sustainable agriculture is a key one. It has its own section of the final draft of ‘The Future We Want’ outcome document which includes a resolution by our governments to:
“increase sustainable agricultural production and productivity globally, including through improving the functioning of markets and trading systems and strengthening international cooperation, particularly for developing countries, by increasing public and private investment in sustainable agriculture, land management and rural development.”
On Monday there was also a large side-event in Rio on farming, the 4th Agriculture and Rural Development Day.
On the challenges of sustainable agriculture, I also had the opportunity to solicit the views of a corporate player in this field. (Pardon the pun.) I asked PepsiCo’s Director of Agricultural Sustainability, Ian Hope-Johnstone, for his views about Rio+20 and why PepsiCo is engaged.
