Food Production: Our Greatest Challenge In The Coming Decades

Global climate change will have a huge impact on agriculture. Maintaining food production is the greatest challenge humanity will face in the coming decades. Continued failure to increase food production will lead to increased prices and will cause global social unrest and famine. Genetic crop improvement can contribute towards solving this complex problem. Novel genetic techniques have been developed in recent years and are advancing rapidly. They include techniques commonly referred to as ‘genome editing’ that allow targeted changes to be made to genomes, such as adding, removing or replacing DNA at specified locations.
Recently, the U.K.’s Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBRC) announced a new position statement challenging the strict European controls on genetic modification and believes they should be swept away to open the door to new crop improving technologies. The BBRC believes the current precautionary approach has stifled GM crop farming in the European Union (EU).
