Fighting Childhood Cancer One Cup at a Time

Lemonade stands create a lasting memory of summer. They’re oases erected during the hottest days of the year that not offer up not only cold drinks for lucky passersby, but also lessons for those who run them. A lemonade stand can teach young people a thing or two about the ins-and-outs of business—and more importantly, a little bit about life.

The lemonade stands set up in early July across seven of Lincoln Financial’s key office locations did just that for the 51 members of the company’s Internship Development Program. Clad in bright yellow t-shirts, the summer interns rallied together for a fundraising day of service intended to educate about the value of good corporate citizenship.

Teams of Lincoln interns set up lemonade stand for several hours on July 9 in Charlotte, N.C.; Concord, N.H.; Fort Wayne, Ind.; Greensboro, N.C.; Omaha, Neb. Philadelphia and Radnor, Pa. in an effort to battle pediatric cancer by selling cups of the lemon-flavored drink.

“It was a fun and rewarding experience,” said Jeremy Boco, a Talent Management intern in Lincoln Financial’s Radnor office. “It was inspiring to see the interns at Lincoln bond while simultaneously supporting a great cause.”

The proceeds from the day--nearly $4,800 in total—went to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), a nonprofit organization which emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of Philadelphia-area cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004) after she announced at the age of four that she wanted to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since 2000, ALSF has evolved into a national fundraising charity raising more than $60 million and funding more than 300 children’s cancer research projects.

Each stand also sold t-shirts and copies of the book “Alex and the Amazing Lemonade Stand,” co-authored by Scott’s parents, Scott and Liz.

On July 23, Lincoln Financial representatives presented a check of the proceeds to the Scott family.

According to Jeff Giacoponello, who heads Lincoln’s Internship Development Program, the lemonade stands were an overwhelming success for everyone involved.

"The Alex's Lemonade Stand Day of Service was an amazing experience,” said Giacoponello. “Supporting Alexandra "Alex" Scott and the evolution of her front year lemonade stand showed us the power of taking action towards something you believe in.”
